Cold Sparks Are Pyrotechnics in Illinois

Over the last several years, “cold spark” machines have become one of the most requested special effects at weddings, concerts, and private events. They create beautiful vertical fountains of sparks that look similar to traditional pyrotechnics but are often marketed as “safe,” “cold,” or “indoor fireworks.”

Unfortunately, this marketing has led to a widespread misunderstanding in the event industry.

In the State of Illinois, cold spark machines are classified as pyrotechnic devices, and they must be handled accordingly. Many DJs and small production companies began using them without the required licensing, permitting, or training. While the effect itself is impressive, using it improperly can create serious safety and legal issues.

Below is what planners, venues, and clients should know.

Cold Sparks Are Pyrotechnics Under Illinois Law

Despite the name, cold sparks are not simply lighting effects.

In Illinois, the effect falls under proximate pyrotechnics, enforced through the Illinois Fire Code and OFSM. Because of this classification, operating these machines requires:

• A licensed pyrotechnic operator
Local fire marshal permit
• Proper insurance coverage
• A defined safety zone and operation procedures

This means that a DJ simply bringing a spark machine to an event and plugging it in does not meet legal requirements.

Many venues are unaware of this classification, which is why these machines sometimes appear at events without permits. However, the responsibility ultimately falls on the operator, not the venue.

How Cold Spark Machines Actually Work

Cold spark machines use a granulated metal alloy powder, commonly titanium-based materials.

Inside the machine:

  1. The material is electrically heated to extremely high temperatures.

  2. The heated particles are propelled upward by air pressure.

  3. As the particles oxidize, they produce the spark fountain effect.

Even though the sparks cool quickly as they disperse, the internal reaction temperatures can exceed 1,000°F.

Because of this:

• The devices generate true combustion reactions
• They produce hot particulate material
• They create fallout that can ignite certain materials

This is why they are regulated as pyrotechnic effects rather than lighting fixtures.

The term “cold sparks” simply refers to the reduced surface burn risk when sparks land, not the temperature of the reaction itself.

Why Many DJs Have Been Using Them Illegally

Cold spark machines became widely available through overseas manufacturers and online retailers. The marketing frequently labeled them as:

• “Indoor fireworks without permits”
• “Safe spark machines”
• “Cold spark fountains with no pyrotechnic classification”

These claims are not accurate under Illinois regulations.

As a result, many DJs and small event companies began using them.

Unfortunately, operating these devices without proper licensing can result in:

event shutdowns
fire marshal citations
insurance liability
venue penalties

More importantly, improper operation can put guests and property at risk.

Why Professional Pyrotechnic Operators Matter

Pyrotechnics are one of the most exciting tools in live entertainment — but they must be handled responsibly.

Professional operators ensure:

• proper site inspection and clearances
• coordination with the local fire marshal
• safe distances and fallout zones
• correct machine placement and calibration
• trained operators supervising the effect

When handled properly, spark effects can be deployed safely and legally, creating incredible moments without compromising safety.

The Right Choice for Pyrotechnics

At MASSIVE, pyrotechnics are not an add-on or novelty — they are a professional production discipline.

Our team maintains:

licensed pyrotechnic operators
• ongoing state recertification training
• compliance with NFPA standards
• proper insurance and permitting procedures
• experience with concert-scale effects

Whether it is cold sparks or flame effects, we design and execute effects safely, legally, and professionally.

This is the difference between a DJ bringing a machine and a production company executing a controlled special effect.

Planning Spark Effects for Your Event

If you’re considering cold sparks or any other pyrotechnic effect, the best approach is to involve a licensed operator early in the planning process.

We work directly with venues and local authorities to ensure the effect can be executed safely and within code.

Contact our production team to discuss safe and fully permitted options.
